Yes, the points you raise reminded me of similar statements made during one of my undergraduate Mesoamerican archaeology classes many years ago that have stuck with me. The prof stressed that virtually every site exhibited evidence of destruction near the end of its ‘peak’ in complexity, and not by the hands of some foreign invader but the domestic population.
