The issues around the 'renewable' energy narratives are complex and, unfortunately, tend to distract us from the underlying predicament of ecological overshoot as we focus on means to try and sustain the unsustainable. In fact, there is increasing evidence that not only are 'clean/green' energy not (in that they also wreak havoc on the environment), but that the pursuit of them and related complex technologies are actually exacerbating our predicament by putting us further into overshoot and increasingly reducing the carrying capacity of our planet. If we're not discussing and pursuing significant degrowth and simplification strategies, then I would argue we are engaging in magical thinking to reduce our cognitive dissonance from the fact that we live on a finite planet and have painted ourselves into a corner.
