I have become increasingly convinced that at least one of the ruling class's primary motivations for championing the non-renewable, renewable energy-harvesting technologies is as you say the profit-generation that can be garnered from it. They, after all, own or are heavily invested in not only the industrial processes necessary for such technologies but the financial institutions that fund such ventures. Despite these being clearly maladaptations (they destroy our ecological systems as assuredly as the use of fossil fuels do), they are marketed as 'solutions' to our 'problems'--ingoring that this is a predicament that has no solutions but at best some mitigations that might 'ease' the journey down the Seneca Cliff of energy contraction.
