Another excellent look into our predicament.

It continues to be somewhat interesting (and of course feeds my confirmation bias) how our thoughts are continuing to align on the subject matter we are interested in and write about.

While I completely agree that the fossil fuels required to build out any ‘clean/green’ energy infrastructure and its dependent technologies, it’s amazing to me how many—even well-intentioned people—rationalise away this reality (mostly with magical thinking and a lot of denial and bargaining).

As I argue in my latest piece:

“The ‘green/clean’ energy-based, utopian future appears increasingly to have become a grand and extremely attractive narrative which its adherents have argued is the ONLY means of ‘solving’ our fossil fuel addiction. It reduces significantly the anxiety-provoking thoughts that accompany a realisation that humanity have severely overshot the natural carrying capacity of the planet, destroying it and untold numbers of other species, and faces a less than utopian future—to say the least. And it avoids, through the use of a tight Overton Window, the much more difficult option of a gargantuan ‘powering down’ our so-called ‘advanced’ economies and mitigating our overshoot in ways that most people (most particularly in these ‘advanced’ economies) would not readily accept.”
